FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Fuego FC defeated Fresno Pacific University (FPU) 2-0 through goals from Kainoa Bailey (LA Galaxy II) and Etiandro Tavares (Real Monarchs) to claim victory in the opening match of the 2017 preseason series Saturday night at Fresno Pacific's Ramirez Field.
The first half opened with the sides trading possession in midfield and few clear-cut chances for either side. As the game opened, Fuego's Ross Lindsay (Campbellsville University) dictated play well from the holding role and, at 36', Fuego saw their best chance of the half saved, as Chiva Cuevas' effort from the edge of the 6-yard box was hit straight at FPU goalkeeper Matias Fernandez.
Bailey opened the scoring in the 51st minute, finding the back of the net after an impressive Fuego combination in the FPU area. Tavares doubled the Fuego lead in the 60th minute, after a blazing run from the right side to run in behind the FPU defense, with his initial effort parried but falling kindly for a tap-in. FPU sparked into life after the 2nd goal, hitting the crossbar with their best effort in the 71st minute.
Preseason preparation rolls on Wednesday, April 19, as the Fuego head to local juco Clovis Community College to take on the Crush. Kick-off is set for 5pm and admission is free.
