CLOVIS, Calif. - Fresno Fuego routed Clovis Community 5-1 Wednesday at Crush Field to remain unbeaten in 2017 preseason play. The Fuego were led by Tony Torres' contribution, who registered a goal and assist.
Fuego CB Alex Culwell opened the scoring in the 18th minute, getting a foot to a ball in the box off of a corner. The pressure was consistent on the Crush goal, with Renato Bustamante (Tampa Bay Rowdies) and Moises Martinez going close to adding a 2nd goal for the Fuego. The Crush equalized in the 33rd, after sloppy play from the Fuego backline earned Clovis a penalty when GK Fabian Florez took down a Crush attacker in the box. The Fuego lead was restored 6 minutes later, with 2 goals in 3 minutes, as Diego Casillas and Tony Torres combined well on each goal to make it 3-1 Fuego at the half.
After the restart, the combination play of Milton Blanco and Etiandro Tavares (Real Monarchs) was notable, with Tavares afforded several scoring chances while running in behind the Crush defense. CB Andres Rios bagged the 4th Fuego goal off of a free header in the 80th minute with Tavares getting his goal in the 86th to cap the performance.
Next up, the club travels to the Bay Area Saturday to take on the University of Santa Clara in a closed session. That match will be the third of four in the 2017 preseason series, with the final game taking place Sunday, April 30, at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
