Top-of-the-table clash set as FC Golden State Force come to Fresno

As the Fuego prepare to host the final regular season home match of 2017, the Southwest division title is up for grabs. The top-ranked Fuego take on 2nd place FC Golden State Force Thursday, July 13 at Chukchansi Park. Kick-off is schedule for 7:30 p.m., and is the final $2 Tecate Thursday of the season.

With a victory, the Fuego captures the Southwest Division title with 33 points. A loss or a draw on Thursday night would extend the title race to the last fixture of the season for both clubs.

After wrapping up a playoff spot in last Saturday’s 3-2 victory over San Diego Zest FC, the Fuego are firing on all cylinders with a six-game win streak in hand. During the streak, the Fuego have outscored opponents 19 to 4. It has been a team effort across the board with nine players having scored more than two goals in 2017. Jose Cuevas is the team’s top scorer at 11 goals, with his latest clinching a playoff spot in the 85th minute against the Zest. Fuego goalkeeper Agustin Rey has also been vital to the team's success this season. Rey’s 38 saves has helped the team to a division best 10-2-0 record.

Sitting at 30 points, however, is not enough to knock off FC Golden State Force. FC Golden State currently has 29 points through a 9-1-2 record. The Force jumped out to a torrent pace, going unbeaten in their first nine matches. During that unbeaten streak, Golden State outscored their opponents 25 to 7. Mark Verso leads FC Golden State with 10 goals and 5 assists, which leads the club in both categories. Verso scored a brace in last Saturday’s 5-3 victory against the Southern California Seahorses. Jose Miranda will most likely be in net for the visitors on Thursday night. Miranda has started the past five matches, playing 90 minutes in all but one match. Opponents have been able to get past Miranda, who has allowed at least one goal in his past five appearances.
